Sonoran AntiPreserve - Soundscape Ecology
‘Sonoran AntiPreserve’ was created to demonstrate the purposes of studying soundscape ecologies and the dichotomy between the natural habitat of the beautiful While Tank Mountains of Arizona and the increasing human occupancy and disruption from the growing urban spread of West Phoenix. Through methods of field recording collections, meticulous sonic analysis, and audio processing techniques, samples were used from sounds exhibiting the unique qualities of the area, both natural and man made, culminating in this condensed and emphasized audio experience depicting the soundscape of this desert region.
Due to the many subtleties within the piece, the quiet nature of several of the sections, and for a more immersive experience, listening with headphones is recommended.
Soundscape Ecology (sometimes termed acoustic ecology) is defined synoptically as soundscape effects on communities of living organisms, human and other, and the potential interactions between sounds in the environment. (“Handbook for Acoustic Ecology” edited by Barry Truax, 1978)
